The blue myrtle cactus, known as Myrtillocactus geometrizans, is a blue-grey candelabra-like cactus bearing a small, sweet, edible berry-like fruit. Its botanical name is derived from the Greek word "myrtillus," meaning whortleberry, and "geometrizans," referring to its geometrically patterned ribs.

Native to Mexico, it has several common names: blue flame cactus, bilberry cactus, whortleberry cactus, and, of course, blue candle cactus due to its color and shape, like a blue candle.

The blue candle cactus is a tall, branched, candelabra-like tree cactus that can grow up to 20 feet tall with its bluish-green, thick stems that are covered in small, white central spines. The growth rate of this attractive columnar cactus is fast. With the right nurturing and care, it can grow fairly tall in height and width.

The flowers of the blue myrtle cactus are small, showy, greenish white, that bloom in the summer and are followed by small, dark red, edible fruits.

The fruit of this myrtle cactus is said to have medicinal properties and has been used to treat a variety of ailments, including digestive issues and skin conditions. It is a small, round, edible fruit with a mildly sweet and tangy flavor.

One of the most unique features of the blue candle cactus is its ability to grow aerial roots that grow above the ground and provide additional support to the Myrtillocactus geometrizans. This adaptation allows the cactus to grow tall and straight, even in windy conditions.

When and How to Water Your Blue Myrtle Cactus

The Blue Myrtle Cactus is naturally drought-tolerant, thriving in arid and semi-arid conditions where rainfall is scarce. Cacti are like Camels; they drink up a lot of water quickly and then can last a long time before needing water again. The blue myrtle cactus prefers watering once every 2-3 weeks in the growing season, and once a month in the dormant season.

In spring and summer, during the growing season, the Blue Myrtle Cactus prefers watering once every two to three weeks. This cycle mimics natural desert rainfall patterns; soaking the roots deeply, followed by a dry period. Too little water during this active growth phase can result in pale or discolored stems and stunted growth, while too much water increases the risk of root rot.

In fall and winter, during the dormant season, water only once a month, or not at all if the soil is slightly moist. Providing minimal water during dormancy helps the cactus conserve energy and prevents fungal problems that can occur in cool, damp conditions. Overwatering in winter is the most common cause of damage, so erring on the dry side is always safer.

Light Requirements - Where to Place Your Blue Myrtle Cactus

If you are growing your blue myrtle cactus indoors, it is best to place the cactus in a south-facing window or in an area that receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day.

This will help ensure that the cactus receives enough light to thrive and prevent it from becoming etiolated. Additionally, be sure to rotate the cactus periodically to promote even growth on all sides.

When growing outdoors, your Blue myrtle cactus prefers 4-6 hours of full sun to partial shade for healthy growth. While this blue myrtle cactus can tolerate some light shade, it will not grow as well in low-light conditions.

If you notice that your Myrtillocactus geometrizans is not growing as quickly as you would like or if the leaves are turning yellow, it may be an indication that it is not receiving enough sunlight.

Optimal Soil & Fertilizer Needs

The blue myrtle cactus likes very airy, porous, nutrient-rich soil with a pH of 5.6 - 6.5, and should be fertilized once a year in spring. Your soil must have a sandy texture and a low water-holding capacity, just like desert soil. Because these plants do not grow well (or at all) in waterlogged soil, you must use a well-draining soil mix. Ideally, you want to use our specialized cactus potting mix that contains 5 natural substrates and organic mycorrhizae to promote the development of a strong root system that helps your Myrtillocactus geometrizans cactus to thrive.

Use a balanced fertilizer with an equal ratio of NPK (5-10-5) for the healthy growth of your cactus, once a year in the spring. So, skip those harsh chemicals and give your Myrtillo cactus some love with some awesome organic fertilizer!

Hardiness Zone & More

The blue myrtle cactus, also known as Myrtillocactus geometrizans, is a hardy succulent that thrives in USDA hardiness zones 9-11.

These zones typically experience mild winters and hot summers, making them ideal for outdoor growing.

In terms of humidity, the blue myrtle cactus prefers a dry climate with low humidity levels to prevent root rot and fungal diseases. It is important to provide well-draining soil and avoid overwatering to ensure the health and longevity of this unique cactus species.

In cooler zones, it can be kept outdoors during the summer and brought in as the temperature drops below 35°F. Although this semi-hardy cactus can withstand temperatures below 25°F for brief periods, prolonged frost can be dangerous.

How to Grow Best Blue Myrtle Cactus Indoors

To grow the best Blue Myrtle Cactus indoors, it is important to maintain a temperature range of 65-85°F and provide moderate humidity levels. Avoid placing the cactus near drafty windows or heating vents, as sudden temperature fluctuations can stress the plant. Additionally, misting the cactus occasionally can help increase humidity levels and promote healthy growth.

Wildlife - Blue Myrtle Cactus Attracts the Following Friendly Pollinators

The Blue Myrtle Cactus is known to attract various species of bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds due to its vibrant flowers and sweet nectar. These pollinators play a crucial role in the reproduction and survival of the cactus, making them essential partners in maintaining biodiversity.

According to ASPCA, the Myrtillocactus geometrizans, is considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it a safe option for pet owners to have in their homes. It is safe to touch and handle, making it a great choice for pet-friendly households looking to add some greenery to their space.

How to Propagate Your Blue Myrtle Cactus

Blue myrtle cactus can be propagated through stem cuttings. To do this, simply cut a healthy stem from the parent plant and allow it to callous for a few days before planting it in well-draining soil. Water sparingly until roots develop, then gradually increase watering frequency.

Key Takeaways

  1. The Blue Myrtle Cactus produces edible purple fruits, which are used in jams, drinks, and traditional Mexican dishes.
  2. It is widely used as a grafting stock for rare and slow-growing cacti because of its strength and rapid growth.
  3. In the wild, this cactus can live for more than 100 years and grow into a large, tree-like form with multiple arms.
  4. The cactus plays an important ecological role by providing nectar, pollen, and fruit for birds, bats, and insects.
  5. Its dried wood has been traditionally repurposed for fencing, firewood, and rustic construction in rural Mexico.

Luxuriously Soft and Packaged Like a High-End Brand
Color: 03 - Champagne, Size: Queen, Color: 03 - Champagne, Size: Queen
I have never owned a 100% silk pillowcase before, especially not at this price point, so I am really glad I was able to experience this one. Even the packaging felt impressive. It was packaged like a luxury brand, which made the whole experience feel special before I even used it. I already had satin pillowcases and thought they were soft, but they do not compare to this mulberry silk pillowcase at all. This pillowcase feels incredibly soft, smooth, and luxurious. I had the satin pillowcases on some of my pillows and this silk one on another, and even in the dark when I turn over during the night, I can immediately tell which pillow has this silk pillowcase on it. The difference is that noticeable. It also has ample room, so you can use a full, fluffy pillow and it will still fit nicely inside the pillowcase. I love the added luxury of the zipper because it keeps the pillow from slipping out, but the zipper is hidden and does not affect the comfort at all. Honestly, this pillowcase put my old flattened pillow to shame. Now I feel like I need to get a new pillow immediately so the pillow can match the quality of the pillowcase. It feels so gentle and smooth against my face, and I love how cool it gets when the air conditioning hits it for a while. For nighttime hot flashes, that cool feeling is such a relief. I also really appreciate that I don't always have to sleep with a satin cap if I don't want to. I have locs, so protecting my hair from lint and dryness is important, but some nights you just want to be completely comfortable without wearing anything on your head. This pillowcase gives me that option while still being gentle on my hair. It also feels better for my skin compared to cotton and other materials because it doesn't seem to soak up all the natural oils from my face. I notice a difference. The only thing I would mention is that while it gives a nice cool feeling at first, it does absorb body heat fairly quickly and can warm up. Even with that, the softness and comfort more than make up for it. I didn't know what I was missing by not having real silk sheets, and now I really crave a full silk sheet and pillowcase set. If they feel anything like this pillowcase, I know that would be some of the best sleep ever. Overall, this pillowcase is soft, luxurious, comfortable, beautifully packaged, roomy, secure with the hidden zipper, and absolutely worth trying.

How do I know if this is ....
Color: 02 - Silver Cloud, Size: Queen, Color: 02 - Silver Cloud, Size: Queen
Mulberry Silk comes primarily from silkworms in China who eat white mulberry leaves, leaving a cocoon of spun silk that is used to weave fabric. With so many cheaper versions of mulberry silk, how do I know if this is the real deal? Well, I really do not know if this pillow fabric is 100% silkworm derived. It is not white so there had to be some level of dye added and that colorant is not listed. So, while I cannot confirm the fabric content, I can share how the pillow feels and functions. I have had silk and satin pillows and went back to cotton because organic cotton simply felt better on my face while sleeping. This pillow case is not like other silks, satin, or cotton. The fabric is smooth and soft - it's like sleeping on butter. I woke up this morning with less hair tangle and my face felt cuddled. I washed the pillow case before using it for the first time and the photo of this pillow case on my pillow (next to a red pillow) shows you how this pillow case looks right after being washed and fitted to a queen sized pillow. The only downside to this pillow case is extra care is needed with washing and drying. I washed the pillow case in a mesh bag in cold water and let it hang dry. It's probably not ideal fabric if you have oily skin or go to sleep with makeup because you cannot use harsh detergents to wash this pillow case and you cannot use fabric softener. I tend to wash the rest of my bedding on high heat and dry at high heat to reduce dust mites and other tiny creatures we cannot see on fabric. The zipper is good quality and easy to open and close - at this price point I would have expected a little better design to hide the metal zipper pull - added a photo to show how the metal zipper tab stops about 2 inches from the end of the pillow case with no "tuck-in" feature. The value of this pillow case seems to be fair for a high end product and it makes a nice gift. I don't know anyone who doesn't appreciate buttery soft fabric. There are a ton of pillow cases that claim to be mulberry silk at a fraction of the cost of this pillow case - it's just so hard to know what is authentic and what is not so i can only speak to the fact that this pillow case feels good on my face and doesn't leave me with tangled hair. Hope the photos and the description of my experience with this pillow help you decide if this is the right pillow for you or a loved one. Here's to your comfort!

A tangible upgrade for hair care and sleep quality
Color: 02 - Silver Cloud, Size: King
I bought this a few weeks back to integrate into a more refined sleep setup, and it has easily met my expectations. It's a premium product that delivers on its promises. Material: You can immediately feel the difference in the 22 momme weight. It feels substantially thicker and more densely woven than typical "satin" substitutes, providing a smooth, glassy texture that feels truly high-end. Hair Protection: This is where it really shines. The frictionless surface has completely eliminated morning tangles and frizz. It allows hair to glide naturally, which is a massive relief if you are trying to preserve hair health or styles overnight. Comfort: It stays incredibly cool to the touch throughout the night. If you sleep hot, this naturally regulates temperature, meaning you never have to flip the pillow searching for the cold side. Appearance: The Silver Cloud color is elegant, and the fabric has a subtle, sophisticated luster. While it does arrive with some packaging creases, they smooth out with a careful press, leaving a very polished look on the bed. Fit: The King size accommodates larger, high-loft pillows perfectly without stretching. The hidden zipper is a great "zero-added-clicks" feature; it keeps the pillow locked in all night without any annoying slippage, though a slightly wider zipper opening would make insertion even easier. Quality: The stitching is tight, and the zipper operates smoothly. It holds up beautifully when hand-washed and air-dried. While $70 is an investment for a single case, the genuine 6A grade silk and OEKO-TEX certification make it a worthwhile piece of luxury.
