The bushings wear, or most likely are completely disintegrated causing the gas pedal to be floppy. If the throttle cable bushing wears enough, the cable can come out while driving, leaving you with no throttle response. The spring is another wear item that can prevent your pedal from returning to stock position. When this happens, the pedal will stick, and your revs will be higher than they should be at idle.
